Yoga Alignment?

Yoga alignment plays a crucial role in the practice and benefits of yoga. It is not about achieving perfect form but also about creating a safe, mindful, and transformative practice.

When the body is aligned, it creates a solid base of support, allowing us to find stability and balance in both static and dynamic poses creating a sense of oneness within as the energy channels open and the restrictions cease to exist.

What are Hands on Adjustments?

The hands-on adjustments are an art. The art of ‘manipulating’ the postures of yoga practitioners -by using highly skilled hands-on techniques- to help them achieve the following:

  • Correct alignment

  • Reduce the chances of injuries by teaching how to feel the appropriate alignment of the postures.

  • Enhance body awareness.

  • Release emotional blockages which can cause tightening of certain muscles, joints or connective tissues.

  • Deepen a particular posture. Which otherwise they might no able to do due to:

    - Tight muscles

    - Tight connective tissue

    - Nervous System (Mechanisms of protection/Mental Barriers)

  • Accelerating their journey to become more flexible, mobile and/or functional.

  • Create new muscle memories to explore broader ranges of movement and flexibility.

  • Unlearn any unwanted/unhealthy pattern of movement and establishing new ones by retraining the nervous system.

  • Experience postures in ways they may have never felt before.

Why I created this course?

Since the beginning, I have always cared deeply for the quality of my practice. I believe that it plays an important role in shaping our understanding of how we view Yoga. In asana practices Alignment have always been a priority and I have always tried my best to understand how to access the poses without harming the body or straining it. 

When we just start practicing, it is obviously a challenge to follow all the instructions from the teacher or to understand how our body moves and reacts to certain movements and poses. We do not know then how can we correct ourselves because we are relying on the instructor to tell us if we are doing something incorrectly or something that is not beneficial to the body. But the challenge is that instructors always don’t have the time to correct and assess everyone’s practice at the same time because they are busy leading the class and it is already a lot for them to give the right movement and breathing ques while keeping an eye on everyone for any big mistakes. In situations like this we miss out on the crucial knowledge of body alignment which will bring about the most benefits of the practice. 

With yogic practices, there is no one size fits all. We have to understand that a yoga practice is an individual practice and when we attend yoga classes with many people, it is hard but not impossible for the teacher to accommodate to everyone’s unique body types and instruct accordingly even though it is very much attempted.

This is why I am creating this course which will help you understand your body better and give you the understanding of how we can use the body that we have in the best way possible to gain maximum benefit and avoid injuries. It does not matter if you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, this course offers attention to details and shares the innate truth about the alignment of the most common and most practiced poses of Yoga. 

Not only this but I want to also help the new teachers who have just started teaching and want know how to accommodate unique body types and help their students to deepen their practice.

Course Content

This course is based on the postures of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series and offers you the knowledge of Alignment and most practical hands-on adjustment techniques to a vast range of poses that the series includes. The Since these asanas are common to other styles of yoga, everyone who takes this course will greatly benefit, irrespective of the style of yoga you practice or teach.

The Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series includes standing, seated, supine and inverted postures. It covers forward folds, backbends, twists and balancing postures. This makes it a very comprehensive and complete inventory of yoga postures. By learning the Alignment and hands-on adjustments techniques for these postures, you will learn almost everything about hands-on adjustments you will ever need to adjust simple to intermediate poses and immense knowledge of Alignment of 60 poses which will help you in your personal practice and teaching.

Curriculum

  • Foundation:

    • Introduction to the foundation on Alignment

    • Introduction: The art of hands-on adjustments and Alignment

    • The science of flexibility and stretching

    • The principles of hands-on adjustments

    • The mechanics of hands-on adjustments

    • Types of hands-on adjustments

  • Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series Postures: Alignment and two to six different adjustment techniques for each 60 asanas

  • Aim and key alignment of the asanas: I will explain the foundational alignment, the aim and the key alignment of each posture. You can execute the appropriate adjustment correctly only when you understand these aspects about a particular posture.

  • Gentle and strong adjustments: Adjustments can be given very gently as well as strongly. We will demonstrate both types of adjustments for each posture

  • Modifications for each pose: How the poses can be modified to make them more accessible for beginners.

  • Increase the body awareness to avoid the common mistakes in poses.

  • Aayush is both a dedicated teacher and student. His own practise is closely observed and woven into his teaching style. The teachings combine the mental, physical and spirit, stemming from the curiosity of his personal practise. He understands that discipline is freedom and is devoted not only to his practise but to himself.
